Jewish Home Outpatient Rehabilitation is excited to announce the addition of Rock Steady Boxing to its rehabilitation programs, designed to improve the quality of life for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. This innovative, non-contact boxing program is designed to help slow the progression of the disease while improving mobility, strength, and overall quality of life.
The exercises in Rock Steady Boxing are adapted from traditional boxing drills, focusing on conditioning for agility, speed, muscular endurance, hand-eye coordination, and balance. This unique approach not only targets physical improvement but also fosters a supportive community for participants.
Maria Fitzpatrick, director of therapy services at Jewish Home, who has been dedicated to providing rehabilitation services for 25 years, shared her enthusiasm: “The Rock Steady Boxing program is tailored to accommodate individuals at all stages of Parkinson’s disease, so we are able to create a program for each participant.”
To ensure the highest quality of instruction, three members of the Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physical Therapy (PT) teams have become certified Rock Steady Boxing coaches. This certification allows them to deliver specialized training that meets the unique needs of those with Parkinson’s.
The impact of Parkinson’s disease is significant, with more than 4,000 people in the Rochester area and over 1 million nationally affected, according to the Rochester Parkinson Network. The introduction of Rock Steady Boxing at Jewish Home is a vital step in providing these individuals with the tools they need to fight back against the disease.
Rock Steady Boxing, a non-profit organization, has established over 800 locations worldwide, each dedicated to changing the trajectory of Parkinson’s disease through exercise. Testimonial videos from participants highlight the program’s success in inspiring hope and confidence, creating a supportive community that empowers individuals to take control of their health.
Participation in Rock Steady Boxing is open to individuals who have symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, including those with atypical forms such as Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), and Lewy Body dementia.
